       Notes - general: Abstract: This report considers theamount of energy
                        consumed to build new roads (some 1800) each year.  It
                        was found that the total energy used in road
                        construction amounts to between 1 and 2% of energy
                        consumed by road transport.  At that level it is
                        unlikely that any possible changes in methods of road
                        construction could lead to significant energy savings.
