       Notes - general: A laboratory experiment is described in which the
                        undulatory extinction angle in a sample of vein quartz
                        has been measured before and after compressive loading
                        to 120 MN/m2 in a testing machine.  It was found that
                        the mean undulatory extinction angle was slightly less
                        after laboratory loading and that the difference was
                        statistically significant.  Possible reasons for this
                        results are discussed.
